Israel Strikes Iran’s Nuclear Sites (WSJ. 20250613)
Israel launched a wide-ranging attack on Iran's nuclear program and military leadership overnight, striking dozens of targets and killing the head of the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Israel said that some 200 jet fighters participated in a first wave of attacks. Part of what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said was an operation aimed at taking out Iran's nuclear enrichment program in which he said could last for days. Iran's Supreme Leader said that Israel should expect severe punishment for the attacks, and Israel says it started shooting down drones launched by Iran in retaliation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. wasn't involved in the strikes and warned Iran not to target American forces. Meanwhile, oil prices have surged in the wake of Israel's attack nearing $75 a barrel as investors fear a regional conflict could disrupt global energy flows. Iran is a major oil producer and holds a strategic position on the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a third of global seaborne oil flows. Stocks in Europe and Asia slipped amid today's fighting, as have U.S. futures amid a wider flight to safety. And a federal judge has ruled that President Trump illegally took federal control of the California National Guard when he deployed them in response to protests in Los Angeles over the objections of the state's elected leaders, the ruling found Trump exceeded his statutory authority and violated the Constitution's 10th Amendment and ordered he returned control of the Guard to California Governor Gavin Newsom. The implementation of yesterday's ruling is currently on hold through Tuesday when an immediate appeal by the Trump administration goes before the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The White House and the Justice Department didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
