Kroger Says It’s Benefiting From Shoppers Worried About the Economy (WSJ. 20250620)

Stocks wavered today after President Trump said late yesterday that he would make a decision on whether to strike Iran within two weeks, easing fears of imminent military intervention. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was just barely higher, gaining 35 points to close at 42,207. The S&P 500 was down 13 points, and the Nasdaq lost 99 points. For the week, the three indexes finished largely unchanged. Among individual companies, grocery chain Kroger raised its annual same store's sales outlook saying it's benefiting from consumers worried about the economy while prices rise at restaurants. It stepped up promotions and marketing of its store brand products. Shares rose 9.8%. The consulting firm Accenture said profit and sales rose in the last quarter, but bookings fell. The company is under pressure because of the Trump administration's efforts to cut spending on federal contractors. Shares dropped 6.9%. And stock in CarMax rose 6.6% after the used car retailer posted better than expected quarterly results as tariff uncertainty sparked demand for secondhand vehicles.
