Renewed Trade Tensions Drive Down U.S. Stocks (WSJ. 20250707)
US stocks fell today after President Trump renewed trade tensions with a range of countries. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 422 points to close at 42,406. The S&P declined 49 points, and the Nasdaq gave up almost 189 points. While Trump extended his pause on so-called reciprocal tariffs until August 1st, stock declines accelerated after the US announced 25% tariffs on goods from nations including Japan and South Korea. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that if the countries adjusted their trade practices with the US, then the tariff rate could come down or go up. Trump also threatened additional levies on countries forging closer ties to the BRICS group of emerging economies, which includes China and India. Leaders from the group of nations met over the weekend and released a statement voicing, quote, "serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures." Among individual companies, Tesla stock slid on the first trading day after CEO Elon Musk said he's creating a new political party. Shares fell 6.8%. The Journal exclusively reports that Taiwan Semiconductor is delaying construction of a second chipmaking plant in Japan in order to invest more in its US expansion ahead of potential tariffs. Shares fell 2.4%, and shares of Shell dropped 2.9% after the energy company said it's expecting its quarterly earnings to take a hit due to volatile gas prices.
