Meta Directors and Shareholders Settle Privacy Suit (WSJ. 20250717)
Meta Platforms shareholders who brought a data privacy case against current and former Meta officials have agreed to settle, ending the trial on its second day. The settlement means that high-profile Meta executives and board members will avoid testifying about their response to the Cambridge Analytica scandal that broke in 2018. Lawyers for both parties didn't immediately return requests for comment on the settlement terms. A Meta spokesman declined to comment. Former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh, who is among the candidates President Trump has said he's considering to replace Fed chair Jerome Powell, said he believes the next person in the role will maintain the central bank's independence from political pressure, even under the Trump administration. Warsh was speaking today in an interview with CNBC. The U.S. Justice Department fired federal prosecutor, Maurene Comey yesterday. That's according to people familiar with the matter. The reason for her firing wasn't immediately clear. Comey was involved in a number of high-profile criminal cases, including those of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. The move comes as some members of Trump's base remain incensed over the Justice Department's decision to backtrack on a promise to release more material from the FBI's investigation into Epstein. And U.S. retail sales rose 0.6% in June compared to the prior month. Commerce Department data shows the increase was driven by strong demand for motor vehicles, sales of clothing, and sales of building materials.
