The Nasdaq Hits 11th Record High for the Year (WSJ. 20250718)
US stocks closed mostly lower today, aside from the Nasdaq which ticked up 10 points to hit its 11th record high for the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 142 points to close at 44,342, and the S&P stayed about flat edging down about half a point. Updates from banks and consumer-focused companies have suggested that the US economy is resilient. And new survey data from the University of Michigan showed consumer sentiment just hit a five-month high. But some investors were disappointed by the latest quarterly results. Elsewhere, President Trump backed away from his threats to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell but still says interest rates should be lower. And today Fed Governor Christopher Waller said if he was offered the Central Bank's top job he would accept. Powell's term as chair ends next year. In individual companies trading today, a surge in trading activity last quarter lifted shares for some brokerages. Shares of Charles Schwab rose 2.9% after it reported a 60% boost in second-quarter profits. And shares of Interactive Brokers rose about 7.8% after it reported double-digit trading volume growth during the same period. Shares of railroad operator Norfolk Southern rose 2.5% a day after a WSJ exclusive report that Union Pacific is in talks to acquire its smaller rival, according to people familiar with the matter. And shares of cryptocurrency-sensitive stocks rose after Trump signed the first piece of US crypto legislation into law. Shares of Coinbase advanced 2.2%, and Robinhood shares gained 4%.
