Stocks Rise Broadly as Earnings Season Ramps Up (WSJ. 20250722)
US stock indexes broadly rose as earnings season ramps up. The S&P ticked up almost nine points and the Nasdaq advanced about 79 points. But the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 19 points to close at 44,323. Earnings for large companies have mostly been positive among those reporting their latest quarterly results. Analysts say stocks are up thanks to rising earnings expectations, the possibility of an interest rate cut and a reduced risk of the punishingly high tariffs investors feared in the spring. Over 100 companies in the S&P are set to report earnings this week. As for trade, investors are keeping a close watch on tariff negotiations ahead of the Trump administration's August 1st deadline, including with the European Union, which the WSJ exclusively reports is preparing to push back after the White House pressed the block to accept levies of 15% or more. Among individual companies trading today, Verizon shares rose 4% after raising its earnings forecast for the year despite losing thousands of postpaid phone customers for a second quarter in a row. Steel producer Cleveland-Cliffs hired JPMorgan to explore selling three recently idled plants, after posting a smaller-than-expected quarterly net loss. Shares rallied 12.5% and shares of fintech company Block Rose 7.2% after the news that it will join the S&P 500 this week. The company will replace Hess following the Energy Company's sale to Chevron.
