S&P 500 Ends the Week With Its Fifth Straight Record Close (WSJ. 20250725)

The S&P 500 and NASDAQ rose to fresh highs following a busy week of tariff updates and earnings. The S&P gained 25 points to notch its fifth straight record close. The NASDAQ added 50 points and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 208 points to close at 44,902. For the week, the Dow gained 1.3%. The S&P rose about 1.5%, and the NASDAQ advanced 1%. Progress in trade negotiations bolstered markets this week. President Trump is set to meet with the president of the European Comission on Sunday, amid signs the two sides could be closing in on a deal, but Trump still hasn't struck deals with either of the U.S.'s largest trading partners, Mexico and Canada. Meanwhile, the dollar strengthened after Trump backed off of his criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell saying late Thursday that he didn't think firing Powell was necessary. In individual companies trading today, Intel shares fell 8.5% after the chip maker reported a wider quarterly loss and said it will lay off 15% of staff and scrap plans to spend tens of billions of dollars to build new chip making facilities in Europe. Samuel Adams brewer, Boston Beer logged higher profit and revenue in the latest quarter and now expects a more moderate effect on costs from proposed tariffs. Shares rose 6.5%. Shares of Deckers Outdoor gained more than 11% after it beat first quarter expectations. The footwear and apparel company said Hoka and Ugg shoes boosted sales.
