White House Seeks Fines From Universities in Exchange for Federal Funding (WSJ. 20250725)
We're exclusively reporting that the White House is seeking fines from several universities it claims failed to stop anti-Semitism on campus in exchange for giving the schools access to federal funding. That's according to a person familiar with the matter. A White House official said that the deal the Trump administration struck with Columbia University earlier this week is now a blueprint for negotiations with other universities. The Trump administration has sued New York City, claiming that their sanctuary-city policies are unconstitutional and limit local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. The office of New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he generally supports the essence of the city's sanctuary laws and policies, but agrees they go too far. Meta Platform said starting in October, it will halt all political advertisements being displayed on its social networks in the European Union, pointing to an incoming law said to tackle foreign interference in elections and the spread of misinformation. The European Commission did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The announcement follows a similar move from Alphabet's Google, which last November said it would halt political ads in Europe. And a manhunt is underway after a shooting at the University of New Mexico campus left one person dead and another injured. School officials haven't named the shooter or the victims. The university and the campus police didn't immediately return requests for comment.
