Tesla Profit Plunges on Weak EV Sales (WSJ. 20250723)
US stock indexes rose today in response to signs of a potential European Union trade deal and the news earlier of a US Japan agreement. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 508 points to close at 45,010. The S&P 500 rose 49 points, and the Nasdaq climbed 127 points. The EU is negotiating an outline for a trade agreement with the Trump administration, in which it would accept 15% tariffs on most exports to the US. Japanese auto stock surged leading a global rally in car makers, Toyota shares rose nearly 14%. Among individual companies, AT&T gained more wireless and internet subscribers than expected last quarter, and its revenue topped forecasts. The company's stock ended the day up 1.2%. Hilton Worldwide posted better than projected results, but its earnings outlook for this quarter disappointed investors, shares fell about 2.5%. This quarter's earnings per share forecast for chip maker Texas Instruments disappointed analysts who said executives struck a cautious tone on tariffs, shares dropped over 13%. After the closing bell, Google parent company Alphabet shares were lower in off-market trading despite beating expectations for its second quarter earnings results this afternoon. And Tesla's net income plunged 16% in the second quarter, marking further steep declines at the company as automotive sales continue to fall. Shares fell in after-hours trading.
