American consumers' economic mood improved this month, but remained clouded by concerns about tariffs and the labor market. That's according to The Conference Board whose monthly consumer confidence index climbed to 97.2 in July from 95.2 in June. About 30% of consumers said jobs are plentiful, up one percentage point from June, but the number who said jobs are hard to get grew two points, from 17% to 19%. And the shooter who killed four people at a Midtown Manhattan office building yesterday left a suicide note that indicated he was targeting the National Football League at its headquarters. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the note suggested the gunman believed he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a brain disease associated with head injuries, and that he blamed the NFL for his condition.
