Stock Indexes Slip as U.S. and Chinese Officials Discuss Extending Tariff Pause (WSJ. 20250729)U.S. stock indexes slipped as U.S. and Chinese trade negotiators discussed extending the current tariff pause for another three months. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 205 points, to close at 44,633. The S&P 500 slid 19 points, and the Nasdaq gave up 80 points. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer say the negotiations with China have been constructive, but they haven't come to an agreement. The two sides are still discussing details, including over 20% import duties on Chinese goods related to the country's role in the fentanyl trade. But Beijing did agree to continue to allow the export of rare earth magnets, which are widely used in electronics, cars, and weapons. If the tariff pause expires on August 12th, U.S. levies on Chinese imports could climb to more than 80% on most goods. While President Trump said the talks went well, he didn't commit to extending the trade truce. Among individual companies trading today, UnitedHealth Group said its earnings for 2025 will miss Wall Street expectations because of rising costs and operational shortfalls. Shares fell 7.5%. Novo Nordisk stock plunged after the Danish pharmaceutical company cut its guidance due to headwinds for its weight loss drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy. Shares fell 23%. And audio streaming service Spotify says it added more subscribers in the second quarter, but it swung to a loss because of higher personnel, professional services, and marketing costs.
