Tsunami Waves Reach Hawaii After Massive Russian Earthquake (WSJ. 20250730)Japan and parts of Northern California are under tsunami warnings after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Russia's far east this morning local time. The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude of the earthquake at 8.8, making it one of the 10 biggest on record if confirmed. Officials in Hawaii have reduced the tsunami warning to an advisory saying the initial waves reaching the state weren't significant. But Governor Josh Green urged people to remain cautious saying it would be several hours before an all clear signal could be given. Investors will be closely watching the Federal Reserve's interest rate update later today. With the central bank widely expected to leave its key rates unchanged in the range of four and a quarter to four and a half percent. But this week's Fed meeting could see something that hasn't happened in over three decades, more than one governor voting against the chair. With Jerome Powell already under pressure from President Trump to accelerate the pace of rate cuts, two of the President's appointees have said they support cutting rates potentially going against Powell. The Fed's interest rate decision is due out at 2:00 PM Eastern. And Porsche slashed its annual guidance again, partly to reflect the new European Union-U.S. trade deal. The pact will hit the EU with baseline tariffs of 15%, including for cars. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz warned that revenue will be significantly lower than last year as tariffs hit car and van sales.
