U.S. Stocks Drop as Investors Await Tariff Deadline (WSJ. 20250731)U.S. stocks closed lower today as the Friday deadline for new tariffs weighed on investors. Used car seller Carvana saw its shares jump 17% on higher profit and revenue. And software company Figma soared more than 250% and its stock market debut. In contrast, the chip maker Qualcomm fell 7.7% despite reporting stronger than forecast results. While another chip company Arm saw its shares decline 13% after mostly missing Wall Street expectations. After the bell, Amazon reported sharp increases in sales and profit, partly fueled by the growth of its cloud computing business, but shares fell 3% and early after hours trading. And Apple's iPhone sales blew past Wall Street's expectations in the June quarter as some U.S. consumers rushed to buy their devices before potential price increases from tariffs.
