Indexes Fall Modestly as Trump Expects Chip, Pharma Tariffs Soon (WSJ. 20250805)

President Trump's announcement of new tariffs on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals kept markets in flux. Trump also continued his campaign against India over its ties to Russia, saying he was likely to raise tariffs on Indian goods "very substantially" over the next 24 hours. That's from a planned 25%. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 both posted modest losses, dropping about 0.7% and 0.5% respectively. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day slightly lower as well, dropping 62 points to end at 44,112. Treasury yields mostly edged lower while oil prices continue to fall. Among individual companies, Palantir's stock jumped nearly 8% after the data software company reported strong quarterly earnings and raised its yearly outlook. Pfizer shares gained about 5% after the drugmaker boosted its annual profit guidance. Hims and Hers stock, however, plunged 12% after the company's revenue failed to meet expectations. Gartner shares fell nearly 30% after the research and advisory firm lowered its yearly revenue targets, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals stocks slid 21% after the biotechnology companies said it would halt advanced testing on a painkiller.
