Major Indexes Up as Trump Hikes India Tariffs and Investors Dig Into Earnings (WSJ. 20250806)

U.S. stock indexes mostly gained ground today as investors processed more corporate earnings reports and all eyes are on any last-minute trade updates ahead of President Trump's tariff deadline. The president followed through on threats to punish India for buying Russian oil. Saying Indian imports will be subject to an extra 25% tariff on top of the 25% rate they already face. The broad S&P 500 and the technology-heavy Nasdaq, both advanced ending the day up 0.7% and 1.2% respectively. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 81 points closing at 44,193. Among individual companies, shares of McDonald's rose 3% after the company said its sales rebounded, suggesting its focus on affordable food was working. Disney raised its annual profit forecasts for streaming and parks. Overall revenue was in line with estimates while earnings beat forecasts shares dropped 2.7% however. Shopify's U.S. listed shares jumped almost 22% after it reported better than expected results and noted that expected tariff impacts had not materialized. Uber's revenue topped forecasts, as did its guidance for this quarter. It also approved a new share buyback shares, paired losses, and were close to flat dropping 0.2%. And Moderna shares dropped today as the Department of Health and Human Services canceled a grant for the company's bird flu shot. Shares in the company dropped 2.8%.
