The Nasdaq Hits Another Record High While Other Major Indexes Slipped (WSJ. 20250807)

U.S. stock indexes finished mixed as new tariffs took effect. Though the Nasdaq composite hit a record high for the 17th time this year, ending up around 0.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.5% while the S&P 500 declined 0.1%. Among individual companies, shares of Apple gained after the company announced an extra $100 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing. The move came just after President Trump said a 100% tariff on semiconductors would include an exemption for companies that invest domestically. The iPhone maker's shares rose almost 3.2%. Firefly Aerospace soared more than 34% in its first day of trading. Eli Lilly sank 14% after its weight loss pill didn't meet Wall Street expectations in a clinical trial. Crocs shares slid 29% after the company warned of a quarterly sales decline and an annual hit from tariffs. And Bumble fell 16% after reporting a drop in quarterly sales.
