Israel’s Security Cabinet Approves Plan to Control Gaza City (WSJ. 20250808)

Israel's Security Cabinet has approved a plan for the military to take control of Gaza City. It comes after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to take over the entire enclave saying that Israel doesn't plan to hold Gaza permanently, but will enact a five-step plan to end the war. The plan has faced opposition from the head of Israel's military, while families of hostages and large swathes of the Israeli public reject the strategy in Gaza. Hamas has warned against an Israeli takeover of the enclave, calling on the international community to condemn it. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has defended his country's right to take part in possible peace talks between Russia and the US in the coming days. Russian President Vladimir Putin, said yesterday he hoped to meet with President Trump, possibly in the United Arab Emirates. A White House official later cast doubt on the summit taking place unless the Russian leader also agreed to a meeting with Zelenskyy. And President Trump has announced plans to make it easier for everyday Americans to invest their retirement savings. Controversially, it means investing in assets that lie outside of public markets, such as private equity, cryptocurrencies and private real estate. Wall Street hedge funds and private equity firms have for years, wanted to tap into the giant pool of money in the 401(k) and other defined contribution plans.
