U.S. Stocks Edge Lower as Trump Extends China Tariff Deadline (WSJ. 20250811)
U.S. stocks closed modestly lower today after President Trump extended a deadline for higher tariffs on China. The Dow Industrials were down just under half a percent. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day down 0.3%, and the S&P 500 finished a quarter percent lower. Gold futures were down a little after President Trump posted on Truth Social that there would be no new tariffs on the metal. Among individual companies, chip makers Nvidia and AMD fell about 0.3% each. After news, they agreed to give the government 15% of sales from certain artificial intelligence semiconductors sold to China. Cryptocurrency-linked stocks rode a wave with Bitcoin's price today. Coinbase was up almost 3%, and MicroStrategy rose 1.3%. Shares of AMC Entertainment climbed 3.4% after the cinema operator reported better-than-expected quarterly results. Shares of the lithium producer Albemarle jumped 7% after a Chinese battery maker suspended a mining project. Shares for UFC owner TKO Group climbed more than 10% after it struck a seven-year deal with Skydance's Paramount for exclusive rights to UFC fights.
