U.S. Wholesale Prices Climbed Faster Than Expected in July (20250814)
US wholesale prices climbed faster than expected in July, re-accelerating after they held steady a month earlier. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the Producer Price Index, or PPI, jumped by 0.9%, the biggest monthly rise since 2022 and higher than economists expectations. Prices for both wholesale goods and wholesale services grew. Meanwhile, the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell to 224,000 last week. Fewer claims than economists expected. That's according to Labor Department data. Though job creation has slowed, the absence of a big uptick in weekly claims figures continues to suggest that the labor market is avoiding a significant rise in layoffs. The buy now, pay later company Klarna saw its revenue jump to $823 million in the second quarter, thanks to growing momentum in its biggest market, the US, where it's expanding through partnerships with Walmart, eBay, Nexi, Worldpay, and JPMorgan. But the unlisted Swedish financial services company's net loss widened to $52 million due to higher expenses, including credit loss provisions and funding costs. And European industry felt the effects of the pullback of tariff front-running in June as industrial production declined more than expected. According to the European statistics agency Eurostat, industrial production fell 1.3% in June, more than reversing the 1.1% increase seen in May.
