Hot Inflation Report Leaves U.S. Stocks Mixed (20250814)
US stock indexes finished mixed, as a surprising inflation report tempered investor excitement. The producer price index's July increase of nearly 1% was the largest in more than three years, causing traders to pull back on bets for an interest rate cut in September. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq were each done less than a 10th of a percentage point, while the S&P was up less than a 10th. Among individual companies, shares of Tapestry dropped almost 16% after the luxury fashion company warned of a challenging year for its Kate Spade brand. Deere's stock dropped about 7% after the farm equipment maker lowered its annual profit forecast. Coherent stock tumbled 20% after the laser company reported a wider quarterly loss of $96 million. Lululemon and Nike stocks fell about three and 1% respectively, due to inflation fears and worries of decreased consumer spending. And the cryptocurrency exchange, Bullish, gained another 10%, following its $1.1 billion initial public offering.
