SoftBank Bets on Embattled Chip Maker Intel (20250819)
Japanese tech-investment giant SoftBank has agreed to invest $2 billion in Intel, offering the embattled chip maker a boost at a time when the Trump administration is also discussing the possibility of taking its own 10% stake in the company. The investment is helpful for Intel, which has seen its fortune sag lately. Investors seem to like the move, with Intel shares rising more than 5% in off-hours trading. Add this to the growing list of products subject to tariffs: knives, electrical transformers, and hundreds of other finished goods that had evaded Trump's duties on steel and aluminum but are now subject to a 50% levy. The change represents a significant escalation of Trump's metal tariffs, with the expanded duties applying to about $138 billion of imported goods, according to estimates from Michigan State University professor Jason Miller. And the Trump administration has restored a public website that tracks federal spending, a victory for lawmakers who had complained that the White House was using the blackout to freeze funding without public disclosure. The website was taken down in March by the White House Office of Management and Budget, which prompted a lawsuit by an advocacy group and complaints by lawmakers that it was difficult to tell if funds passed by Congress were being spent. OMB didn't immediately comment on the website being restored.
