U.S. Home-Building Climbed Unexpectedly in July(20250819)
Home building in the U.S. increased unexpectedly last month. The Commerce Department reported housing starts, a gauge of new residential construction, came in at 1.428 million in July, exceeding the expectations of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal, and starts were nearly 13% higher than a year earlier. The National Association of Home Builders says the rise in housing starts comes despite builders' sentiment worsening a little as mortgage rates remain high. Home Depot says tariffs may soon start hitting some price tags. The home improvement retailer previously said it would not raise prices. The Atlanta-based company said today consumers are tackling small home improvement projects and continue to hold off on larger projects because of higher interest rates and economic uncertainty. Home Depot posted $45.28 billion in revenue today, higher than the year prior, but below analysts' expectations. And, Air Canada's flight attendants will return to work after reaching a deal to end a three-day strike that grounded hundreds of flights and hit around half a million customers. The union said the tentative deal was reached after more than nine hours of talks with the help of a mediator. A spokesman for the union didn't respond to a request for comment about the terms of the agreement. Air Canada said it would gradually restart its operations with some flights taking off this evening.
