Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court for Swift Tariffs Decision (WSJ. 20250904)
With up to $1 trillion in potential tariff revenues at stake, the Trump administration is trying to speed through its Supreme Court appeal of an earlier legal ruling that rejected the president's global trade levies. A federal appeals court ruled last week that Trump had exceeded his powers by claiming emergency authority to rewrite US trade policy, but allowed the tariffs to remain in place through mid-October to give the government a few weeks to ask the high court to hear the case. A federal judge has ruled that the Trump Administration improperly cut $2.2 billion in research funding from Harvard University and must restore the funds. Yesterday's ruling by US District Judge Allison Burroughs of Massachusetts concluded that the federal administration's actions violated Harvard's constitutional rights and that the government used anti-Semitism as a smokescreen for "a targeted ideologically motivated assault on this country's premier universities." And Porsche is set to leave Germany's DAX for the first time since it joined the Blue Chip Index after its initial public offering in 2022. The share price of Porsche, majority owned by Volkswagen, has taken a hit this year after US tariffs and challenges in the Chinese auto market led to a series of guidance cuts. At the same time, the British luxury brand Burberry is set to rejoin London's FTSE 100 index after being demoted from the top 100 stocks a year ago. The trench coat maker's share price has risen 95% since then with the company benefiting from a brand revamp strategy.
