EU regulators have launched an investigation into Snapchat's child protection measures.
The EU pointed out that the age verification system designed to ban youth under the age of 13 from using Snapchat is lax, potentially leading to exposure to harmful substances (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, drugs).
Currently, lawsuits and regulations regarding youth protection on social media are increasing globally, particularly in Europe (e.g., France, Denmark, and Spain are pushing for legislation to limit the age of social media users).
This is because social media is deemed addictive and harmful to mental health.
In February, the EU demanded corrective measures regarding TikTok's overall design, stating that its addictive design could harm users' physical and mental health.
The EU is conducting this investigation under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
This law requires major online platforms to more aggressively police their platforms for illicit behavior.
If found to have violated this, fines amounting to up to 6% of their annual global revenue could be imposed.
