Espinosa, who was the eighth employee at the time, still works at Apple today. Staying at one job for a lifetime is rare, and it is almost unheard of, especially in Silicon Valley where job hopping is frequent.
Apple was co-founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976 and celebrated its 50th anniversary on Wednesday.
Espinosa recalled that at the time of the company's founding, hope and anxiety coexisted, and most companies went out of business because they could not find customers or grow.
Much has changed since then. Apple's corporate value is ~$4 trillion, profits are ~ $100 billion, and ~2.5 billion phones, tablets, computers, earphones, and smartwatches are in use worldwide. These days, expectations are rising for innovation, particularly regarding the use of AI.
Espinosa witnessed Jobs's dismissal and return, as well as the company's poor performance and growth, and noted that devices other than computers were unimaginable at the time.
The 2,000 shares Espinosa received during Apple's IPO are estimated to be worth $57,000 per share, totaling $114 million in current value.
