In Wuhan, China, several robot taxis stopped operating on the road, trapping passengers and blocking the path.
The robot taxis were vehicles for the Apollo Go service, an autonomous vehicle program by Baidu, China's largest internet company.
Police stated that an unexplained system failure occurred but did not disclose how many vehicles were affected.
Baidu has not released a statement.
The automotive industry has high expectations that autonomous vehicles and electric vehicles will lead the industry. Internal combustion engine vehicles are slower than electric vehicles in responding to driving instructions.
In the United States, Waymo and Tesla are investing heavily in autonomous driving. Waymo plans to test robotaxis in London.
Baidu announced last year that it would provide robotaxis to ride-sharing service provider Lyft for testing in Germany and the UK.
Autonomous vehicle company Momenta announced plans to test in Europe with ride-sharing service provider Uber.
Autonomous vehicle company WeRide is currently testing in Abu Dhabi, Singapore, and some Chinese cities.
The timing of the incident in Wuhan is particularly awkward for Baidu and China, as an auto show where Chinese authorities will showcase electric vehicles and technology is scheduled to be held in Beijing in a week.
