책장 정리 정돈하면서 오늘은 프랑스 철학자 프레데릭 르누아르(Frédéric Lenoir)의 [Happiness: a philosopher's guide]를 기록해 둡니다. 프랑스 첫 출간은 2013년 [Du bonheur: Un voyage philosophique]이며 한글 번역본은 『행복을 철학하다』(책담 2014)로 나와 있네요.
필자가 읽은 ‘행복’에 관한 여러 책들 중에서 손가락에 꼽을 수 있는 몇 안 되는 행복론 중의 하나입니다. 다른 흥미로운 구절들도 많이 있지만 늘 “쉽지 않은” 주제(아래 인용)도 감명感銘 깊게 읽었습니다. 그가 피력披瀝하는 행복론 중 제14장의 그 대목은 다시금 깊은 고뇌에 빠지게 하며 오래 기억에 남을 것 같습니다.

Several scientific studies have shown that there is a link between happiness and altruism: the happiest people are those who are most open to others and feel just as much—or even more—concern for the fate of others as they do for their own. There is no conflict between the love of self and the love of others, between being happy and making others happy. Quite the opposite: taking an interest in others reduced egotism, which is one of the main causes of unhappiness.(p. 90)
