결점의 아름다움

Beauty of Imperfection

In a society that celebrates diversity, imperfections won’t be considered beautiful; there simply won’t be a dichotomy between perfect and imperfect.

다양성을 높이 사는 사회도 결점을 아름답다고 생각하지는 않을 것이다. 단지 완벽함과 불완전함을 나누는 이분법이 없을 것이다.

Day 115: 3 May 2016, Melbourne

Every Wednesday, a farmer’s market opens on campus. There is one stall with an old man who sells organic fruits. About a dozen wooden boxes are each filled with varieties of apples, pears and seasonal fruits that change every week — this week, they were persimmon, quince and fig.

The old man always greets with a friendly smile and a jolly greeting. Other than the amiable setting that makes me go back every week, there is something to the apples he sells. In different shapes(once I saw a heart-shaped apple), size and texture, the apples are dissimilar from the ones in the supermarket. And they are all a bit rough, slightly covered in dirt.

Now, think about the stacks of apples you saw in a supermarket. How homogeneous were they? Apples of the same size, color and shape that share smooth and glazing surface; for me, they are cartoon-like and flawless apples.

We live under a tyranny of perfection. Ads remind us not to age, whiten our skin (only in Asia), keep fit, and dress up fashionably. We are not only compelled to look perfect, but also to consume things that look flawless. Hence, farmers have no choice but to pick out imperfect apples, which usually are perfectly edible and usually quasi-flawless, and supply a set of identically sleek and polished ones.

Having brought up in Korea, a country with arguably the highest rate of plastic surgery in the world, I probably am more indoctrinated by the idea of perfection than an average European or American (The prevalence and dominance of K-pop in Asia that promulgates a sense of physical perfection would have had an inevitable impact on its audience too). They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the society has placed a filter before everyone’s eyes to perceive only certain aspects as beautiful.

In Korea, people used to point out my facial features for being masculine. A perpetual tan on my skin that only faded while I was in high school — because I stayed mostly indoors, from 7 am to 11 pm — was an obvious shortcoming to be considered pretty in Korea.

When I left Korea, I was more surprised than flattered to learn that high cheekbones are not something I should consider reducing, and darker skin is not something I should cover with thick makeup. While it was mainly due to the different standard of beauty, it was an eye-opening realization that K-pop stars are not the epitome of beauty. Evolutionary and sociological arguments aside — like physical attractiveness has to do with procreative purpose or darker skin is associated with peasants — , beauty standard was more flexible than I thought.

I’m not saying that K-pop stars are manifestation of perfection. They just happen to fit into a beauty standard of a specific place and time. For instance, while the fashion models today embody almost an anorexic body image that too many teenage girls struggle to emulate, less than 100 years ago, people used to take pills to gain weight.

In a society that celebrates diversity, imperfections won’t be considered beautiful; there simply won’t be a dichotomy between perfect and imperfect. Instead, there will be big and small, rough and smooth, round and heart-shaped forms, like the apples in the farmer’s market.

The apples I get there cost about four times more expensive than the ones in big supermarkets. But I still pick a handful and leave with a weekly portion of apples in a brown paper bag, hoping that the world — and especially the Korean society — sees the beauty in differences and appreciates diversity someday. Because that’s where the true beauty is.

매주 수요일마다 학교에서 시장이 열린다. 그중 한 곳에서는 할아버지가 유기농 과일을 파는데, 다양한 종류의 사과와 배 그리고 매주 바뀌는 제철 과일이 가득한, 한 열 개 정도의 나무상자가 나열되어있다. 이번 주에는 감과 모과 그리고 무화과가 있었다.

할아버지는 항상 미소로 반겨주시곤 하는데, 그런 친절한 분위기 말고도 매주 찾아가게 하는 다른 이유가 있다. 그곳에서 파는 사과들은 대형 할인점에서 파는 것들과 달리 모양이 다양하고 (한번은 하트 모양 사과를 본 적이 있다) 크기와 재질이 다채롭다. 그리고 약간 흙이 묻어 겉면이 거칠기도 하다.

대형 할인점에서 본 사과 무더기를 생각해보아라. 각각이 얼마나 비슷하게 생겼던가? 사과들은 같은 크기에 색깔, 모양에다가 겉면은 하나같이 매끄럽고 반들거리지 않았던가? 마치 만화영화에나 나올 법한 결점 없는 사과 같지 않은가?

우리는 완벽함의 전제 하에 살아가고 있다. 광고들은 우리에게 늙지 말고, 피부는 하얗게 하고, 날씬해지고 멋지게 차려입으라고 일깨워준다. 사회는 우리에게 완벽하게 보이라고 할 뿐 아니라 우리가 소비하는 것들에도 흠이 없기를 강요한다. 그렇기에 농부들은 완벽하지 않지만, 분명히 먹을 수 있을뿐더러 거의 완벽한 사과들을 골라 버린 후, 반들반들하고 빛이 나는 것들만 공급한다.

아마 전 세계에서 가장 높은 성형수술 시술 비율을 보일 한국 사회에서 자라면서 나는 평균적인 유럽이나 아메리카 사람들보다는 완벽성에 더 세뇌당했다고 생각된다 (아시아 전반에 보급되고 유행인 케이팝은 동시에 신체적 완벽함을 전하기에 케이팝 팬들도 그 영향을 불가피하게 받았을 것으로 생각한다). 아름다움은 보는 이에 달려있다고 한다만 사회는 구성원들의 눈앞에 필터를 장착해서는 특정한 생김새만을 아름답다고 생각하게 한다.

한국에서 사람들은 종종 내 생김새가 남자 같다고 지적하곤 했었다. 게다가 종일 실내에만 있었던 고등학생 시절을 제외하고는 항상 피부가 까만 편이었는데, 이는 한국에서 예쁘다는 소리를 듣기에는 너무나 두드러지는 결점이었다.

한국을 떠난 후, 튀어나온 광대가 깎아야 할 것이 아니며, 까만 피부가 밝은 톤의 비비크림으로 가려야 하는 것이 아니라는 걸 알았을 때, 나는 으쓱해지기는커녕 놀랐던 기억이 난다. 물론 미의 기준이 다른 것이 주된 이유이긴 했지만, 아이돌들이 아름다움의 전형이 아니라는 걸 알게 된 건 꽤 큰 깨달음이었다. 진화론이나 사회학적 주장은 고려하지 않는다고 치더라도 (생식과 번영을 위해 신체적 매력이 중요했다든지, 어두운 피부는 소작농과 연관되었다든지 하는 어느 정도 정당한 주장 말이다), 미의 기준은 내가 생각해왔던 것보다 훨씬 더 유동성 있었다.

아이돌들이 완벽함을 표방한다고 말하는 것은 아니다. 그들은 단지 특정 장소와 시기에 알맞은 미의 기준에 들어맞을 뿐이다. 마치 현재 패션모델들이 거식증에 가까운 몸매를 가지고 있고, 청소년들은 이를 따라 하려고 하는데 반면, 불과 100년도 전, 사람들은 아름다워 보이기 위해 체중 증가 약을 사 먹었던 것처럼 말이다.

다양성을 높이 사는 사회도 결점을 아름답다고 생각하지는 않을 것이다. 단지 완벽함과 불완전함을 나누는 이분법이 없을 것이다. 대신에 크고 작은, 거칠고 부드럽고, 동그랗고 하트 모양의 것들이 있을 것이다. 마치 시장에 있는 사과처럼 말이다.

사실 거기서 파는 사과들은 대형 할인점에 비해 네 배 정도 비싼 편이다. 그래도 나는 매주 먹을 만큼의 사과를 한 움큼씩 집어 갈색 종이봉투에 넣어 무게를 잰다. 이 세상이, 특히나 한국 사회가, 다름에 있는 아름다움을 보고 다채로움의 진가를 알아차리기를 바라며 말이다. 그게 바로 진정한 아름다움이 있는 곳이니까.
