안녕하십니까,
저는 최근 또 하나의 문화에서 아카이브 인턴으로 함께하게 된 메이시 권(Macy Kwon)입니다.
저는 오래전부터 페미니즘 시학에 관심을 가져왔으며, 김혜순과 최승자의 비평과 작품을 읽으며 또 하나의 문화를 처음 알게 되었습니다. 특히 젠더 관점을 통해 대안적인 의식과 현실을 상상하고자 했던 또 하나의 문화의 뿌리적 출발에 깊이 매료되었습니다. 실험적인 네크로포에틱스와 젠더 기반 폭력 문제를 둘러싼 공동체적 활동이 교차하는 지점 또한 제가 또 하나의 문화 자료를 디지털화하는 작업에 참여하고, 한국의 페미니즘 담론을 더욱 깊이 읽어보고 싶었던 중요한 이유였습니다. 이러한 작업을 통해 교육, 문학, 아카이브, 그리고 사회 전반에서의 성평등에 대해 보다 정교하고 세계적인 이해에 조금이나마 기여할 수 있기를 바랍니다.
저는 최근 프린스턴 대학교에서 비교문학을 전공하고, 미국학과 젠더·섹슈얼리티 연구를 부전공으로 졸업했습니다. 학위 논문에서는 급진적이고 반식민주의적인 시인 최승자와 Simone Yoyotte를 비교하며, 시민 불안과 전쟁과 같은 불안정한 역사적 시기에 어떤 시적 형식이 등장하는지를 탐구했습니다. 저는 특히 아카이브의 침묵, 파편화된 역사, 그리고 식민주의와 군사주의의 유산과 마주할 때 창조적 저항이 아카이브와 문학, 그리고 사회 속에서 어떻게 나타나는지에 관심을 가지고 있습니다. 또한 미국 학자 Saidiya Hartman의 「Venus in Two Acts」을 김혜순과 Maryse Condé 같은 작가들의 작품과 함께 읽으며, 역사를 기록한다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지에 대한 제 생각이 크게 변화했고, 이는 제가 아키비스트이자 글 쓰는 사람의 길을 고민하게 된 계기가 되었습니다.
현재 저는 한국의 주요 페미니즘 텍스트들을 정리한 비평적 참고문헌 목록과 데이터베이스를 구축하고 있으며, 그 시작으로 글 읽기와 삶 읽기(조한혜정)와 페미니즘의 도전(정희진)을 포함하고 있습니다. 또한 또 하나의 문화 행사 사진들을 아카이빙하고, 또 하나의 문화 구성원들과의 인터뷰를 영어로 번역하는 작업도 진행하고 있습니다. 이러한 작업을 통해 이 역사들이 언어의 경계를 넘어 더 많은 사람들에게 접근 가능해지기를 바라며, 동시에 또 하나의 문화의 현재와 미래에도 의미 있는 자료가 되기를 희망합니다. 또 하나의 문화와 함께 더 많은 이야기와 역사를 읽고 배우며 성장할 수 있기를 기대합니다.

My name is Macy Kwon, and I’ve recently joined Alternative Culture (또 하나의 문화) as an archival intern. I have long been interested in feminist poetics and my introduction to Alternative Culture began through reading the critical works of Kim Hyesoon and Choi Seung-ja. I was especially drawn to Alternative Culture's grassroots origins, as a network of scholars and writers committed to imagining an alternative consciousness and reality through the lens of gender. The mélange between experimental necropoetics and the community-based work around gendered violence is a central reason why I wanted to help digitize Alternative Culture’s materials and to read more deeply into feminist discourse in Korea, in hopes of contributing to a more nuanced, global understanding of gender equity in education, literature, the archives, and society.
I recently graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Comparative Literature and minors in American Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies. My thesis compared radical, anticolonial poets Choi Seungja and Simone Yoyotte, asking what mode of poetics arises under precarious time periods of civil unrest and war. I am especially interested in how creative revolt appears in the archives, in literature, and in society when we confront issues of archival silences, fragmented histories, and the legacies of colonialism and militarism. Reading the American scholar Saidiya Hartman's “Venus in Two Acts” in conjunction with writers such as Kim Hyesoon and Maryse Condé reshaped how I think about recording history and led me to the pursuit of a path as an archivist and writer.
Right now, I am building a critical bibliography and database of key Korean feminist texts, beginning with 조한혜정의 글 읽기와 삶 읽기 and 정희진의 페미니즘의 도전. I am also working on archiving various photos of Alternative Culture events and translating interviews with Alternative Culture members into English. Through this work, I hope to make these histories more accessible, not only across languages, but for Alternative Culture's present and future. I am thrilled to read, grow, and encounter more stories and histories while working with Alternative Culture. (2026. 3.)
