Youth Views on Nuclear?

Energy Choices by Age and Region

Most people might assume that the electrical self-sufficiency rate — which reflects the gap between regional electricity consumption and electricity generation — would be lowest in a metropolitan area. Surprisingly, however, Daejon recorded the lowest rate. This result suggests that discussions about electrical self-sufficiency should not be viewed simply as conflicts between metropolitan areas and provinces.

Regarding future energy sources, preferences differed by generation and region. Overall, renewable energy was selected as the most necessary sourcem followed by nuclear energy. Respondents aged 18-29 and those over 70 showed relatively higher levels of support for nuclear energy. In terms of regional responses, there were some differences between the results of the two survey agencies; however, it was generally observed that respondents in the Daegu/Gyeongbuk region demonstrated a higher rate of support for nuclear energy.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment(MCEE) announced that, based on the survey results, it will proceed with the construction of two new nuclear power plants. Compared to the past, preference for carbon-free energy appears to have increased significantly. In my own view, it is particularly interesting that support for nuclear energy has risen among younger generations. Is this because perceptions of nuclear energy have changed to see it as safer and more realistic, influenced by the High-Level Radioactive Waste Special Act, or is it the result of broader media influence?
