Hov전용 수신기가 멊어서 내는돈

� 차량에 최소 3명 이상이 탑승해야 이용할 수 있는 차로

지난 26~28일, 우리는 버지니아 리치몬드를 경유해 노스캐롤라이나를 다녀왔다.버지니아 리치몬드까지 가는 I-95 도로가 극심하게 막혀 잠시 익스프레스(유료) 차로를 이용하게 되었다. 당시 차량 탑승 인원이 5명이었고,

“3명 이상 탑승하면 무료로 이용할 수 있다”는 이야기를 들은 적이 있어
정확한 규정을 확신하지는 못했지만 일단 이용해 보았다.

여행을 마치고 고속도로 이용 요금을 확인하는 앱을 열어보니,
27일 노스캐롤라이나 구간에서 이용한 내역만 표시되어
“아, 잘 처리됐구나” 하고 안심했다.

그런데 갑자기 $40가 충전되었다는 알림이 와서 다시 확인해 보니,
26일 이용 금액이 $23 이상 과금되어 있었다.
결국 무료가 아닌 유료로 처리된 것이었다.

자세히 알아보니 이유는 명확했다.

단순한 E-ZPass 수신기가 아니라,
E-ZPass Flex 수신기가 필요했던 것이다.

이 Flex 수신기에는 HOV 3+ ON / OFF 스위치가 있어서

3명 이상 탑승 시 → ON

혼자 이용 시 → OFF
로 설정해야 요금 면제 또는 정상 과금이 된다.
이 설정을 하지 않으면 인원이 충분해도 유료로 자동 과금된다는 사실을 그제야 알게 되었다.

이미 주행을 마친 뒤였지만,
초행길이었고 규정을 몰랐던 경우에는 요금 조정이나 웨이버(면제)를 신청할 수 있다고 해서
일단 신청을 해 두었다.

과연 잘 처리될지는 조금 더 기다려 봐야 할 것 같다.

On the date of the incident, my family and I were traveling on this roadway for the first time. We entered the HOV 3+ express lanes believing that compliance was based solely on the number of occupants in the vehicle. At the time, we were not aware that a specific EZ-Pass transponder with an HOV switch was required in order to qualify.

This was an unintentional mistake due to unfamiliarity with the roadway and its specific requirements. There was no intent to avoid tolls or violate the rules. Had we understood the transponder requirement, we would have either used the appropriate device or chosen the regular toll lanes.

We have since taken the time to understand the regulations and will ensure full compliance in the future.

Given that this was a first-time, unintentional error on an unfamiliar road, I respectfully request that this violation be waived or reduced as a courtesy.
