Insadong: the spot for tourism

A mix of tradition and modernity

Internship report by Rand

Have you ever heard of Insadong? Near Anguk Station, Insadong Street is well-known for being an ideal tourist destination, bringing together traditional shops, restaurants, tea houses, and art galleries.

If you want to buy souvenirs or immerse yourself in Korean culture, Insadong is a must-see. Insadong was an intriguing area to visit as a tourist. I enjoyed a pleasant stroll while contemplating the contrast between old and new structures.

If you wish to visit Insadong but aren't sure where to begin, there is a Tourist Information Center with a variety of pamphlets and maps to help you plan your trip. I took each one of them!

What is attractive in Insadong?

You should absolutely visit every shop! There are so many interesting shops, unique to themselves, all telling us a story about Korea. Even in small alleys there are interesting shops to visit.

As you can see in the images, there are numerous items like ancient accessories, stamps, traditional garments, traditional delicacies, figurines, fans, etc. Insadong is also visited for the about 100 galleries in the area, where tourists can find beautiful and interesting traditional artworks.

If you prefer to party, then I recommend visiting Insadong at night! The mood is very lively at night because so many people gather to reunite, eat together, and enjoy the restaurants and tea houses. You can also go between 14:00 and 22:00 on Saturday or Sunday when the main street is closed to vehicular traffic so the shops can set up booths outside and welcome everybody comfortably

What can you also do?

Some famous spots around Insadong are the Bukchon Hanok village, the Unhyeongung Palace, and the Changdeokgung Palace. Therefore, after your walk down Insadong Street, you can visit each one of them to observe lovely traditional and ancient architecture. Remember that wearing a hanbok (traditional Korean garment) grants you free admission to all palaces. You may rent one for a reasonable price and take pictures (of yourself or the view) while admiring the amazing sights!
