How to get around in Korea

The best map apps to use

by 야나트립
Internship report by Rand

Do you think you can use Google Maps in Seoul to find your way? Unfortunately, it is a big no.

The best way to get around is Korea is to use local apps such as Naver Map or Kakao Map. I will introduce both of them and some other useful apps, so you can choose the app best suited for you.

Naver Map

Naver is fast at obtaining and displaying information in real-time. Users of Naver Maps can directly participate and modify the information, which will be updated after screening in two days. This will keep you from having the unpleasant experience of visiting a closed restaurant. It can show you more information about the place you want to visit, pictures, ratings, comments, menu, etc. Therefore, the advantages of Naver are firstly the " Naver Smart Order" service which gives restaurant information and menu, enabling people to easily choose a place as well as allowing shop owners to enjoy the advertisement effect. Then, it has also "Today's Pick for You" which suggests everyday new places near you to go to, a feature I use all the time as a new traveler.

This app supports four languages: Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese. I chose to put it in Korean to get used to Korean~

KakaoMap

Kakao has similar features such as navigation, timing, and information about various locations. kakaoMap, on the other hand, allows you to share your location with friends who use KakaoTalk, allowing you to easily find your friends' locations when you have appointments with them. No waste of time~

I also noticed that KakaoMap provides more statistical information such as who visits the most between men and women, the average age of the clients, facility information, and peak times.

However, KakaoMap only supports Korean and English.

Kakao Taxi

Another useful app in South Korea is Kakao Taxi!!

In my case, I take a taxi whenever I do grocery shopping and have lots of bags to hold.

Another reason to take the taxi is when it is late at night and you want to go home fastly but the buses/metros aren't it... or when you are late for an appointment it is better to take the taxi too. It is not too expensive, and it depends on the distance. It is better to take a taxi when you are 2 or more to make it cheaper! Moreover, as you had booked the taxi from the app, you don't need to talk to the driver, nor give him the address because he has everything from the app too.
