ARCHETYPES
Internship report by Jake
In an immersive multisensory universe Alessandro Michele, the designer of Gucci, tries to express his poetry in a manifesto on how the archetypes should be displayed. Located in Dongdaemun Plaza (DDP) and originally planned until March 27th, the exhibition will be held till Sunday, April 10th. Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station Exit 1 and you will see a coral pink air balloon with the Gucci Archetype style on it. Being the first time at DDP you will be amazed by the building that has a distinctive neo-futuristic design that was envisioned by the world-renowned architect, Zaha Hadid.
Once you have found your way to the entrance of the Gucci Garden exhibition you will need to take an elevator to the second floor. The staff on the ground floor do ask if you have made a prior reservation before visiting the exhibition. Even if you did not make a reservation you go up to the second floor and fill in your phone number which will give you a place in line. Depending on what number you get it might take a while. For reference, I was placed around 30 and missed the first one after 1:30 hours of waiting, and the second time around 40 people was in front of us which took roughly the same amount of time waiting. When you get close the 10th place, it might even not take a full minute and you are allowed to go in. Do note that you should show up within 5 minutes or you will lose your place and have to queue back up again.
Once it is your turn you can pick up your tickets and enter the hall which is beautifully wrapped in the coral pink that can be seen throughout the DDP.
Additionally, you also get a booklet where the individual rooms are being described and on what collection season it was based, be aware that it is fully in Korean. However, on the back, there is a QR-Code for you to scan to have an audio guide which is both available in Korean and English. When you enter the first room you will see monitors hanging all over the room, they wanted to create a kaleidoscope that stands out like dreamlike darkness. The displays show how Michele wants his work to be portrayed in his multiverse. Not to spoil any more details about the other rooms, there will be some pictures from the exhibition down below. There are in total 7 rooms each of them is from a different season that Gucci has brought out their collection. Every room has a different story and a different viewpoint on how the fashion industry or life, in general, is supposed to be envisioned according to Michele. Even though the exhibition will only be till Sunday it is definitely worth making a quick trip to DDP where also many other exhibitions are being displayed.
Even if you are unable to make it, there is a virtual tour available, https://embed.eazel.net/gucci-garden-seoul/
To finish your trip to DDP you should go visit Gwangjang market which is only 10 minutes and rich in history, which will be further explained in the next blog!
