해녀 (Haenyeo) : Sea + Women, Female divers
Women who dive without oxygen mask until the depth of water 10 meters and gather shellfish to live.
한수풀 (Hansupul) is a proper noun. The name of haenyeo school.

In 2021, I came to enter the 14th introductory course of Jeju Hansupul Haenyeo school that Hak-kyo will continue the tradition of culture of Jeju Haenyeo. It was listed as UNESCO's Intangible Culture Heritage of Humanity in 2016. Because of Covid-19 virus, I was apprehensive that the Haenyeo school may not recruit freshmen in 2021, but fortunately it collected members.
2 Haenyeo schools in Jeju-do :
Jeju-Si Hansupul & Seoguipo-Si Beophwan
There are 2 Haenyeo schools in Jeju-do. One is in Jeju-si, and the other is in Seoguipo-si. The reason why I select Hansupul Haenyeo school of the two is that it came first when I searched internet. Then I didn't know there were 2 Haenyeo schools.
The two schools have a difference besides location, Beophwan school opened in 2015. And then it had about 150~190 students graduate, and about 30~50 graduates of them joined the fishing community(어촌계), and have been acting as a career Haenyeo. There is only vocational class in that school. The number of students selected is about 30. And additional points are added if applicants have the recommendation of the fishing village(어촌계). There is an interview as well as document in admission selection. And the lesson is on Saturday and Sunday, and proceed for 2 months.
The opening of Hansupul Haenyeo school : For transmitting culture of Haenyeo
In 1966, Jeju Haenyeo was the largest in number, so there were Haenyeo-s more than 24,000 then, but at the end of 2017 there were about 3,900. Young Haenyeo to learn the work of Haenyeo newly are gradually disappearing, so Jeju Haenyeo is suffering from aging. In 2017 Haenyeo in seventies and over were about 2,300, and it accounted for the 60% of the whole Haenyeo-s.
For the conservation of Jeju Haenyeo culture and the community maintenance, Jeju-do is taking an active step. Jeju-si is running Hansupul Haenyeo school, and is providing funds. Besides it provides the cost of joining the fishing village 1 million won to the person to want to be a new Haenyeo, and it supports the settlement fund 300,000 won every month for 3 years to a person under 40 years of age.

Hansupul Haenyeo school was opened in 2008, to the effect that the school passes on to the younger generation the disappearing Haenyeo culture because of the aging of Haenyeo-s, the exhaustion of fish resources and difficulties in working conditions, as Kui-duk-2-Ri civil autonomy specialization project.

Introductory course and vocational course
There are 2 courses in Jeju Hansupul; for the beginner and for the professionals. One is the beginner course(the introductory course), and the other is the vocational course.
Hansupul Haenyeo shool opened in 2008, being selected as a village-specific project in 2007. Then there was only introductory class, in 2017 vocational class was set up, so it has had jthe 14th introductory class and the 5th vocational class.
The introductory course recruits 30 persons who are under 51 years old, and don't have to live in Jeju-do. Migrant women or foreign women can be entered. It collect men of the 10 percents of fixed number and the maximum 3 men can be accepted the application for Haenam(해남, male divers).
The vocational course recruits 20 persons who live in Jeju-do for two more years. They must have the recommendation of the fishing village chief or diving chairperson.
Not living in Jeju and not having the recommendation, I am not eligible for the recruitment of the vocational course. And I applied for the introductory course.
For Hansupul Haenyeo school admission : Only document
The selection process is very simple with only document review. Every year Haenyeo school opens from the beginning of May to the end of August. It takes the enrollment from at the beginning of April. The enrollment form consists of 4 big questions including self introduction, reasons for application, public relation plan of the culture of Haenyeo and mental attitude for education.
I read all the articles about Haenyeo school to apply for it. The articles say that someone failed several times to enter. Therefore, it is important to write the enrollment form discreetly and actively. As the entrance is determined without interview or any other process, only enrollment form, it looks extremely important to draw up document. And as extra points will be added for those who can donate talent in specially culture, art, design, photo and computer, it is good to write one's talents.
I wrote the enrollment form with painstaking care. When young, I liked sea and playing in the sea, as much as my dream was to become Haenyeo. So when I get to have the spare time 1 year after resignation, the thoughts that came uppermost to my mind was the very Haenyeo school. I wrote the form with all my passion and the whole heart, including my anxiety that school has no class because of COVID 19.
One of 4 questions of the enrollment form, I thought that self introduction, reason of application and mental attitude for education are bound in one category. I analyzed the public relation plan of the Haenyeo culture is one question and one category. So I considered that Hansupul Haenyeo Hak-kyo would set a high value on the public advertisement of culture of the Haenyeo. Therefore, I wrote out it very strenuously. One of them was to write about Haenyeo school as this brunch blog, and to write the same contents in English. Jeju-do is getting famous to foreigners. So it was my simple thought of the childish public strategy to tell foreign country the beautiful culture of the Haenyeo that would be worth to keep. Though my English is not so good, I will write it as best I can.
Hansupul Haenyeo school tuition : 100,000 Won + α
The educational expense of Jeju Hansupul Haenyeo school is free. The school receives 100,000 Won to pay for facility maintenance, but it is nothing as compared the program of the school. Be that as it may pay 100,000 Won, everything is not solved in school. Diving suits are lent at school, but goggles (mask, big-eyed, Wang-nun-i) and snorkle (Haenyeo don't use it, but students use it), swim fins, and equipments to dig up something have to bring individually.
Hansupul Haenyeo school schedule : Every weekend
The introductory class opens every Saturday, and the vocational class opens every Saturday and Sunday. Introductory class can audit the vocational class on Sunday, too.
The entrance ceremony will hold on the 8th of May, by beginning OT on the first of May in 2021.
