Entrance of Haenyeo School

Entrance ceremony of Jeju Hansupul Haenyeo School

As the 8th of May was the Parents’ Day, the entrance ceremony was held on Sunday. Originally, like village party, panfried dishes were prepared and invitation events were held. However they said that it was proceeded simply because of COVID-19. One of the graduates of this school recited a Korean poem about the sea of Jeju and Haenyeo.

To collect seafood, she has lived wandering land.

* 곳물질 (Kot-Mul-Jil) is near sea designated and cared for young Haenyeo with poor substance and old Haenyeo to collect seafood.

Following this, there was a congratulatory speech of the principal of Haenyeo school, the chief of Han-Rim-Eup(한림읍) and the president of Han-Rim union. They emphasized the public relations of the Haenyeo school and Han-Rim(한림) fishing village societies(어촌계). Coming around in Seo-Kui-Po Si(서귀포시), I heard "Haenyeo market" opened at Beob-Hwan (법환) union of Seo-Kui-Po, and I saw a hanging banner put up largely at the roadside. The hot pink banner and using instagram made a so young impression, I thought Han-Rim union might have such a young mind.

All of guests were men. These men sat in visitor seats as guest. Meanwhile Haenyeo president sat at the very back of our seats not in visitor seats. I felt that was putting the cart before the horse. It is a vague feeling that Haenyeo does the Haenyeo's work, nevertheless men convey the lift, the culture and the distress of Haenyeo. As everyone of us felt the same mind, we gave the president of Haenyeo association(해녀회장) a bigger and bigger round of applause and cheering when she greeting. It looked nice to see smiling faces of the president and the vice-president of Haenyeo association.

It took about 1 hour to proceed entrance ceremony including commemorative photography.

The breathing is the most important : Respiration class

Right after that there was a breathing class. Instructor Kang Hyuk Ju(강혁주) was in charge of it. He had the qualification certificate of free diving instructor and graduated from the introductory course of Jeju Hansupul Haenyeo school last year. Today and next week breathing class is in the classroom, and the week after next it is going to proceed in the sea. My first record of the free diving breathing was one minute and 30 seconds. They say that everyone comes to breathe more than 3 minutes around the time of graduation. I think I need usual practice for this often.

We learned equalizing, too. When diving, as tympanic membrane is pushed to inner ear because of water pressure, it requires to increase the pressure of outward to balance. Equalizing is essential to prevent the damage of tympanic membrane. There are Valsalva technique and Frenzel technique. Here I also met Valsalva who came out a lot in medical science. And another, I met lung volume graph that I saw everyday in respiratory physiology and pulmonology at the Haenyeo school class, too. According to that graph I breathe in and out. I realized that I myself hadn't done that according the graph though I saw it over 100 times.

The playground of Haenyeo school is the Jeju sea. Though people who want to have experience of Haenyeo can enter the sea by paying expense, the sea is the playground we can freely use. 야호! Finally the exciting Haenyeo practice is started!
