2021 Jeju Hansupul Haenyeo school public relations team
At 10 O'clock in the morning, I went to school earlier than usual. Talent donors of the 14th introductory class and the 5th vocational class in the year 2021 gathered and formed the public relations team.
Recording to write something in the letters of self-introduction for entrance, I was naturally on the PR team, and came into play. We had meeting for about 2 hours. In the middle of it the director came to disturb, not disturb, but we drove him out well(?), and put heads together hard. We don't know names, faces and jobs one another. Though being still strangers, we share an opinion.
My work is to write consistently like now. The team to manage homepage by web programming and the team to manage the Youtube and Instagram were formed. Well, I guess that Haenyeo school being managed with old persons, fishing village residents and small numbers, there is no systematic or modern administration. Don't count on it from Haenyeo school! The manner of this school is slow of Jejudo and a little clumsy handling of things of country village in Jejudo.
I could feel that all the people who are here have an affection for Haenyeo school in their eyes. I'm in the Manuscript team, and I decide to write of a long breath with another member of the team. From now on, we'll share the work, meeting every Saturday morning.

If adding a bit about student union of Haenyeo school, there are chairman, vice-chairman, manager and the chief of financial affairs in introductory class. There are 4 members alike in vocational class. I am in charge of financial chief to do money matter in introductory class. Originally does the manager take care of finances? I applied with my hand up to a person who would take on financial affairs, and I found out that financial chief was in charge of money matter. So I collect membership fees 20,000 Won a month, and pay for snack fees everyweek. The chairman decides on a general matter, keeping in touch closely with the chairman of vocational class. The vice-chairman and the manager are in charge of various tasks. They do works to buy Ho-Mang-Yi at a market and to find where to order snacks and so on.
And I am an informal school nurse of Haenyeo shool in 2021. I took the job to fill an empty medicine box all the while, too. I was ordered to go to pharmacy at Han-Rim-Eup(한림읍), and to buy 100,000 Won worth necessary medication. I bought betadine, alcohol, NS, pain killer, medicine for nausea, gauze, Band-aid. I don't want these medicine to be used. At getting into the water last week, a student of vocational class suffering from diabetes complained of nausea. She asked for consultation if she came taking medicine for nausea is all right.
First day go into the sea of the introductory course!
We change into school uniforms of Hansupul Haenyeo school, and gather on the playground taking Tewak, personal snorkel and mask at the bathhouse. At last we start official class at one thirty. Under the guidance of pilates instructor, a student of introductory class, we all have warm-up exercise. I'm so excited to take me back at the word of command of school callisthenics! Today's weather of the first day to go into the sea is terrible with scorching sun! It's the right day to deep dive into the sea. Having some exercise with squats, I want to jump into the sea quickly and to let off stream.
Sea class is proceeded dividing into introductory class and vocational class. The vocational class is proceeded static apnea time measurement with free diving instructor. The introductory class learn Haenyeo swimming method with professor Kim Jae Young.

For convenience sake, the swimming methods was called freestyle, backstroke, breststroke, but they were not exactly the same. We practice treveling back and forth a distance about 70 meters, putting Tewak in our chests. Backstroke needs a lot of abdominal muscles. Breststroke was the most interesting to me. Actually I saw closely Haenyeo working, when I free dived at Seup-Seom. Then it was the footwork moving their feet. It need not a lot of power, usually it is the swimming method to use when they find something to catch looking down at the surface of the sea. Moving the legs open and close in eight-shape, the point of this time is not to bed our knees.
In the textbook of Haenyeo school, 「 Understanding of Jeju Haenyeo 」, an introduction about various method of fin kick has been made.
First, flutter kick is freestyle kick. Using the whole leg, down-kick and up-kick are sorted. If one just do up-kick, the feet are coming out of the water, and the momentum is low, so one feels more tired. Therefore, paying attention to the down-kick, to kick using one's entire body including abs becomes a more efficient kick.
Second, side kick is called scissors kick. In the action of flutter kick to tile the torso to the side and to kick is useful for rescue when one drag from the side.
Third, back kick is a kick moving backward at the posture to look up at the sky lying on the surface. If one needs to drag from behind during rescue, it can be used efficiently. Today in the sea Haenyeo teachers say to direct our eyes to the tip of the fins not looking up the sky. When we kick like this, I use abs a lot.
Fourth, dolphin kick is similar to the whale's swimming behavior, and it is named after this. Straightening legs and pressing down, an once bending the torse forward and shaking fins together is the movement of dolphin kick. Its propelling power is the best.
Diving method of Haenyeo : Duck Dive
When diving, to use duck-dive skill well can minimize water resistance making the body streamlined. The reason why this efficient dive is important makes us be able to take a longer dive, minimizing oxygen consumption. Looking at the method of duck-dive in order, it's as follows :
First, to make a forward motion capable to exerting momentum using fins.
Second, to lower the upper body at 90 degrees and to stretch arm s in the direction of the ocean floor.
Third, to keep the bottom in the line with the upper body kicking up legs.
Fourth, to make forces at work push the body down affected by gravity, gathering legs together and standing vertically.
Fifth, to pull the water once with arms and to do the pressure equalizing, when fins are submerged in water, and to start kicking fins.
After swimming practice we played practicing duck dive freely. We came to look at the Jung-Nang(정낭) and the statue of Haenyeo 5 meters down of the surface. It's easy for me to dive without wearing lead around my waist. When young, I often played diving in the sea, it may be my brain as procedural memory.
It was terribly hot, but the sea was cold. I need good diving suit fitting well. After finishing free practice, we came out of the sea at about 4. The first getting into water and Haenyeo practice was successful. We all finished it pleasantly and without any accident.
