3) not

not so much A as B : A라기보다는 B

a) I was not so much angry as disappointed.

= I was more disappointed than angry.

= I was less angry than disappointed.

= I was disappointed rather than angry.

나는 화가 났었다기보다는 실망했었다.

As likely as not : 거의 틀림없이

b) As likely as not [More likely than not],

the two sides will reach an agreement.

아마도, 양측은 합의에 도달할 것이다.

As often as not : 보통[대체로]

c) Behind many successful men, there is,

as often as not [more often than not],

a woman who makes this success possible.

많은 성공한 사람들 뒤에는, 보통 그 성공을 가능하게 한 여성이 있다.

d) He is not my friend but my brother’s.

그는 내 친구가 아니라 내 동생의 친구이다.

e) Not that I hate reading, but that I have no time.

독서가 싫다는 것이 아니라, 시간이 없다는 것이다.

f) He is well-known not only in Korea, but all over the world.

그는 한국에서 뿐 아니라, 전 세계적으로 유명하다.

g) You may not believe it, but that’s true.

믿지 않을지 모르지만, 그것은 사실이다.

h) I left him not because he was poor but because he was cruel.

내가 그의 곁을 떠난 것은 그가 가난해서가 아니라 잔인했기 때문이다.

i) You should not despise him because he is poor.

그가 가난하다고 해서 경멸해서는 안 된다.

j) He knows French and German, not to speak of English.

그는 영어는 말할 것도 없어, 프랑스어와 독일어도 한다.

* not to speak of = not to mention = let alone = still [much] more

k) I cannot but laugh. = I cannot help laughing.

= I cannot choose but laugh. = I cannot refrain from laughing.

웃지 않을 수 없다.

4) 그 밖의 부정표현

a) He seldom, if ever, goes out.

그는 좀처럼 외출하지 않는다.

b) he seldom [never] attends our meeting.

= He attends our meeting very seldom.

= He hardly ever attends our meeting.

그는 좀처럼 우리 회의에 참석하지 않는다.

* if any / if ever / if at all / if anything

There is little, if any, hope. (설사 있다 하더라도 희망은 거의 없다.)

Correct errors, if any. (만일 있다면, 잘못을 고쳐라.)

Things are, if anything, improving. (사태는 오히려 호전되고 있다.)

He seldom goes out, if at all. (그는 거의 외출하는 일이 없다.)

c) He knows better than to believe it. = He is wiser than to believe it.

= He is not so foolish as to believe it.

그는 그것을 믿을 만큼 어리석지는 않다.

d) He was nowhere to be found.

어디에서도 그를 찾지 못했다.

A man appeared from nowhere.

어디선지 모르게 한 남자가 나타났다.

He came from nowhere to win the championship.

이름도 없던 그가 선수권을 획득했다.
