스가랴 1장 3절 : 그러므로 너는 그들에게 말하기를 만군의 여호와께서 이같이 이르시되 너희는 내게로 돌아오라 만군의 여호와의 말이니라 그리하면 내가 너희에게로 돌아가리라 만군의 여호와의 말이니라
오늘 말씀을 읽으며 인간의 자유의지가 하나님께 어떤 위치를 차지하는지를 다시 생각하게 됩니다. 에덴동산에서 선악과를 두신 때부터 이스라엘이 역사 속에서 수없이 하나님을 배반했을 때에도 하나님은 단 한 번도 인간의 자유의지를 거두시지 않으셨습니다.
그 하나님께서 지금도 우리에게 "돌아오라"고 하십니다. 이 말은 우리의 자발적인 선택을 기다리시겠다는 뜻이며 동시에 하나님께서 인간과의 관계 안에서 원하시는 상호성을 드러내는 것으로 이해할 수 있습니다.
전지전능하신 하나님께서 인간의 자유의지를 침범하지 않으십니다. 오히려 그 의지가 스스로 작동하기를 기다리십니다. 관계는 강제로 성립되지 않기 때문입니다. "돌아오라"는 요청은 인간의 응답 없이는 관계의 회복도, 동행도 이루어질 수 없다는 전제를 담고 있습니다. 결국 신약에서 "나는 너희를 종이라 하지 않고 친구라 하겠다"고 하신 말씀도 같은 맥락에서 이해할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 주종이 아닌 상호적 교제를 원하십니다.
하나님께서 원하시는 회복은 억지로 이루어지는 구원이 아닙니다. 진정한 회복은 인간 고유의 특성이 보존되는 가운데 인격적인 전환을 통해 이루어집니다. 돌아온다는 것은 단순한 후회나 감정이 아니라 스스로의 선택으로 하나님과의 단절을 자각하고 그 단절의 책임을 기꺼이 받아들이는 행위입니다.
그리고 하나님은 그 자각 위에 응답하시며 말씀하십니다. "내가 너희에게로 돌아가리라."
하나님은 기다리시는 쪽을 선택하십니다. 그분은 자신의 권능으로 인간을 굴복시키지 않으시고 끝까지 기다리며 설득하고자 하십니다. 이는 인간의 자유의지에 대한 하나님의 깊은 신뢰이자 가장 큰 위험 감수라 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 기다리시며 인내하시는 그 모습 안에 하나님의 사랑이 고스란히 담겨 있다고 믿습니다.
Zechariah 1:3 : Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: "Return to me," declares the Lord Almighty, "and I will return to you."
Todays passage makes me reflect again on the place of human free will before God. From the time He placed the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in Eden, and through every moment when Israel turned away from Him throughout history, God never once took away human freedom.
And this same God still says to us, "Return to me." These words show His willingness to wait for our voluntary choice, and they also reveal the mutuality God desires in His relationship with us.
The all-powerful God does not override human freedom. Instead, He waits for it to move on its own. Relationship cannot be forced. The call to "return" carries with it the truth that without human response, there can be no restoration, no walking together. In the same spirit, Jesus later said, "I no longer call you servants, but friends." God seeks not domination, but fellowship marked by mutual love.
The restoration God desires is not a salvation imposed by force. True restoration preserves the uniqueness of human nature, taking place through a personal turning of the heart. To return is not just a feeling of regret, but the deliberate choice to recognize our separation from God and to accept responsibility for it.
And on that recognition, God responds with His own promise: "I will return to you."
God chooses the way of waiting. He does not compel us by His power but patiently invites, persuades, and endures. This waiting is at once Gods deep trust in human freedom and His greatest risk. And within that long patience, we glimpse the fullness of His love.
