The World Did Not Recognize Him
요한복음 1장 10절 : 그가 세상에 계셨고, 세상이 그로 말미암아 지은 바 되었으되 세상이 그를 알지 못하였고
400년간의 침묵 후 하나님은 자신의 아들을 세상으로 보내셨습니다. 그런데 그 방법은 우리가 기대하는 구원자에 대한 모든 편견을 뒤집는 방식이었습니다. 신의 현현이라는 엄청난 사건이 일어났지만, 누구나 알아보고 부정할 수 없는 명백한 방식이 아니었습니다. 오히려 쉽게 알아볼 수 없고, 오해하며 의심할 수밖에 없는 모습으로 오셨습니다.
눈에 보이는 증거와 분명한 확실성으로 오셨다면 구원의 사역은 더 쉬워 보였을지도 모릅니다. 그러나 하나님은 세상이 알아보지 못하는 길을 택하셨습니다. 영광과 힘으로 드러나지 않고 평범한 인간의 모습으로 결국에는 십자가라는 가장 실패한 자리에서 자신을 나타내셨습니다.
요한은 이 사실을 “세상이 알아보지 못했다”라는 말로 표현합니다. 세상이 알아보지 못했던 것은 세상의 무지 때문만은 아닙니다. 하나님이 그렇게 숨어 계시는 방식을 의도적으로 선택하셨기 때문입니다. 마치 “너희가 생각하는 확실함으로는 나를 만날 수 없다”고 말씀하시는 것 같습니다.
결국 하나님을 아는 길은 우리의 눈으로 확인하는 길이 아니라, 하나님께서 스스로 자신을 보여주시는 은혜에 기대는 길인것 같습니다. 그래서 신앙은 언제나 모호함과 불확실성을 안고 살아가는 삶일 수밖에 없는 것 같습니다. 하지만 동시에 바로 그 자리에서 참된 신뢰가 시작됩니다. 확실히 알 수 없기에 우리는 스스로를 붙드는 대신 하나님께 붙들릴 수밖에 없습니다.
모호함은 우리를 불안하게 만들지만 동시에 하나님을 의지하도록 이끄는 하나님의 방식이라는 생각이 듭니다. 우리가 확실함으로 하나님을 소유하려는 순간 신앙은 교만으로 기울지만 모호함 속에서 은혜를 기다리고 붙드는 순간 신앙은 겸손과 의탁이 된다고 생각합니다.
세상은 그분을 알아보지 못했지만 은혜로 눈이 열리는 이들은 그 안에서 구원을 발견합니다. 신앙은 내가 하나님을 붙잡는 일이 아니라 하나님이 자신을 드러내시며 우리를 붙잡아 주시는 은혜의 사건임을 고백하는 삶이라 믿으며 오늘도 하나님의 은혜를 구해봅니다.
John 1:10 : He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
After four hundred years of silence, God sent His Son into the world. Yet He came in a way that overturned every expectation we might hold about a Savior. The incarnation of God was an event beyond imagination, but it did not arrive in a form that was obvious or undeniable. Instead, He came in a way that could be overlooked, misunderstood, and doubted.
Had He come with visible proof and undeniable certainty, the work of salvation might have seemed easier. But God chose the way of hiddenness. He did not appear with glory and power, but in the form of an ordinary man, ultimately revealing Himself at the cross, the place that looked most like failure.
John captures this with the words, “the world did not recognize him.” This was not only because of human ignorance. It was also because God deliberately chose to remain hidden in this way. It is as if He were saying, “You cannot find me through the kind of certainty you expect.”
In the end, knowing God is not about what we can verify with our own eyes, but about trusting the grace by which He chooses to reveal Himself. Faith, then, is a life that carries ambiguity and uncertainty. Yet it is precisely in that place where true trust is born. Because we cannot be certain, we are drawn away from clinging to ourselves and instead are held by God.
Ambiguity unsettles us, but it is also God’s way of leading us to dependence. When we try to grasp God through certainty, faith bends toward pride. But when we wait and cling to Him in the midst of uncertainty, faith becomes humility and surrender.
The world did not recognize Him. But by grace, those whose eyes are opened discover salvation in Him. Faith is not my grip on God, but the confession that He reveals Himself and holds us fast. And so today, I seek again the grace of God who comes not in certainty, but in His own hidden yet saving presence.
