When Chronos Meets Kairos
요한복음 2장 4절 : 예수께서 이르시되 여자여 나와 무슨 상관이 있나이까 내 때가 아직 이르지 아니하였나이다.
인간의 시간, 곧 크로노스는 소멸을 향해 흐릅니다. 아무리 붙잡으려 해도 모든 존재는 언젠가 끝을 맞이합니다. 잔치의 기쁨을 상징하는 포도주도 결국은 바닥을 드러냅니다. 넘쳐나는 웃음과 노래가 어느 순간 잦아들 듯 크로노스 속에서 우리는 반드시 결핍의 자리에 서게 됩니다.
그러나 그와 다른 하나님의 시간, 카이로스가 있습니다. 카이로스는 흘러가는 시간에 불현듯 의미를 새기고 영원의 빛이 스며드는 순간입니다. 인간의 삶이 정해진 끝을 향해 흘러갈지라도 카이로스는 그 흐름 한가운데서 여전히 살아야 할 이유와 존재의 뜻을 밝혀줍니다.
예수님의 첫 표적인 가나의 혼인잔치에서 일어난 사건을 시간의 두 얼굴로 바라보면, 포도주가 떨어진 일은 인간의 시간이 가진 결핍을 드러낸 것이었고, 물이 포도주로 변한 사건은 그 결핍 속에 카이로스가 스며든 순간으로 볼 수 있을 것 같습니다. 예수님은 “아직 내 때가 이르지 않았다”고 말씀하셨지만(크로노스), 바로 그 자리에서 하나님의 때가 잠시 얼굴을 드러내셨습니다.(카이로스) 아직 오지 않았는데 이미 비추는 영광이었습니다.
이 표적은 단순히 잔치를 이어가기 위한 편의가 아니었습니다. 소멸로 흘러가는 인간의 시간이 하나님의 영원에 접속된 사건이었고 옛 질서가 새 언약으로 바뀌는 전조였습니다.
우리의 삶이 이 가나의 잔치같다는 생각을 합니다. 기쁨은 쉽게 바닥나고 흥겨움은 오래 머물지 않습니다. 그러나 바로 그 결핍의 자리에서 하나님은 스스로를 나타내십니다. 그리고 이렇게 나타나신 하나님, 아직 오지 않은 하나님의 때가 오늘 우리의 시간 속에 미리 비쳐 들어오는 순간을 발견하는 눈, 그것이 믿음이라고 생각합니다.
믿음은 크로노스의 속에서 낙심하는 것이 아니라 그 흐름 속에서 이미 다가온 카이로스를 알아보는 것 같습니다. 가나의 혼인잔치에서 물이 포도주로 변했던 것처럼 우리의 결핍 또한 하나님의 영광을 드러내는 무대가 될 수 있다는 생각을 합니다. 오늘도 이미 우리 곁에 와 계신 하나님의 영광을 바라볼 수 있기를 바랍니다.
John 2:4 : Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.
Human time, or Chronos, flows inevitably toward its end. However tightly we try to hold on, every existence must one day face its conclusion. Even the wine, symbolizing the joy of the feast, eventually runs dry. Just as laughter and music fade into silence, so too in Chronos we inevitably arrive at the place of limitation.
But there is another kind of time, Kairos, the time of God. Kairos interrupts the flow of ordinary hours, inscribing meaning into a moment, and allowing eternity’s light to break in. Even when human life is moving toward its destined end, Kairos discloses purpose, reason, and the meaning to live within that very flow.
Seen through the lens of these two times, the first sign of Jesus at the wedding in Cana reveals a deeper truth. The shortage of wine exposed the insufficiency of human time, while the transformation of water into wine was the moment when Kairos entered that insufficiency. Jesus said, “My hour has not yet come”, the language of Chronos. Yet in that very place, God’s time briefly revealed itself, the language of Kairos. It was glory that had not yet arrived, and yet was already shining.
This sign was not a simple act of convenience to prolong a celebration. It was the encounter of human time, moving toward decay, with the eternal time of God. It was the foreshadowing of a new covenant breaking into the old order.
I often think our lives are like that wedding at Cana. Joy runs out quickly, and the music of gladness never lingers long. But it is precisely in those empty places that God chooses to reveal Himself. To see the moment when the not-yet of God’s time shines into today’s hours, that is faith.
Faith is not despairing at the end of Chronos, but discerning Kairos already breaking in. Just as water became wine at the wedding in Cana, so our own insufficiencies may yet become the stage where God’s glory is revealed. May we have eyes to behold His glory already present with us today.
