Jesus wept
요한복음 11장 35절 : 예수께서 우셨다
나사로가 병들어 죽게 되었다는 소식을 들으시고도 예수님은 곧장 움직이지 않으셨습니다. 이미 그가 죽을 것을 아셨고 또한 곧 다시 살리실 것도 알고 계셨기 때문입니다. 그러나 그의 누이들과 마주한 그 순간 예수님은 눈물을 흘리셨습니다. 결말을 아시는 분이지만 고통의 자리를 지나치지 않으신 것입니다.
이 장면은 기독교 신앙의 본질을 드러냅니다. 기독교에는 이미 마지막 날의 심판과 부활이라는 결론이 있습니다. 그러나 신앙은 그 결론만을 붙드는 데 머물러서는 안 됩니다. 만약 결론만 중요하다면 인간의 눈물은 무의미해질 것입니다. 하지만 예수님은 눈물의 자리에서 멈추셨고 그 눈물을 함께하셨습니다. 오히려 결론이 예정되어 있기에 그 과정은 더 깊은 의미를 지닙니다. 예수님은 나사로가 아닌 남겨진 이들의 고통을 끌어안으시며 위로하셨습니다.
그 후 예수님의 명령으로 나사로는 다시 살아났습니다. 그러나 그것이 모든 것을 끝낸 것은 아니었습니다. 부활을 경험한 나사로도 삶을 이어가다 결국 또다시 죽음을 맞이했을 것입니다. 여기서 드러나는 진실은 분명합니다. 죽음과 삶은 대립하는 두 사건이 아니라 하나의 생명 안에서 이어지는 연속된 장면입니다. 육신을 입고 있든 영으로 주님과 함께 있든 모두 같은 생명의 가치 안에 놓여 있습니다. 시간 속에서 보이는 죽음은 단절이지만 하나님의 눈으로 보면 그것마저도 생명의 연속선 위에 있습니다.
그러므로 신앙은 단순히 끝을 미리 아는 자의 안도감으로 머물러서는 안 됩니다. 오히려 그 결말이 확실하기에 눈물과 상실, 기다림과 무너짐의 순간도 소중한 자리로 드러납니다. 하나님은 그 과정을 무화하지 않으십니다. 그 안에서 우리와 동행하시며 고통을 의미로 바꾸고, 상실을 다시금 생명의 이야기로 엮어 가십니다.
예수님의 눈물은 이 모든 신비를 응축해 보여줍니다. 전능하신 분조차 눈물의 순간을 건너뛰지 않으셨습니다. 영생을 약속하시는 분조차 인간의 눈물 앞에서 멈추셨습니다. 우리의 눈물이 하나님 앞에서 사소할 리 없습니다. 그 눈물 속에 하나님은 이미 계시며 그 고통을 사랑으로 감싸 안으십니다. 그리고 바로 그 사랑을 위해 말씀이 인간의 몸을 입고 우리 가운데 오셨다고 믿습니다.
John 11:35 : Jesus Wept
When Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick and had died, He didn’t rush right away. He already knew Lazarus would die, and He also knew He would raise him again. Yet when He stood face to face with Lazarus’s sisters, Jesus wept. Even knowing the ending, He didn’t skip past the pain.
This moment shows us the heart of Christian faith. We already know the conclusion: the last day will bring judgment and resurrection. But faith is not just about holding on to that ending. If only the conclusion mattered, then our tears would mean nothing. Instead, Jesus stopped at the place of sorrow and shared those tears. Because the ending is certain, the journey itself carries deeper meaning. Jesus comforted those left behind, entering into their grief.
Later, at His command, Lazarus came back to life. But that wasn't the final word either. Lazarus lived on, and one day he died again. What this reveals is clear: life and death aren’t two separate events, but part of one continuous story. Whether in the body or with the Lord in spirit, we remain within the same stream of life. What looks like a breaking point to us is, in God's eyes, still part of life’s wholeness.
Faith, then, isn't just a kind of relief that comes from knowing the ending ahead of time. Because the ending is sure, even the moments of tears, loss, waiting, and breaking down are holy. God doesn’t erase those parts of the story. He walks with us in them, turning pain into meaning and weaving loss back into the larger story of life.
The tears of Jesus hold all this mystery. The Almighty did not avoid the moment of weeping. The Giver of eternal life paused before human sorrow. Our tears are never small before God. He is already present in them, wrapping our pain in love. And it is for this love that the Word became flesh and made His home among us.
