Who is truly good
마태복음 19:17 : 예수께서 이르시되 어찌하여 선한 일을 내게 묻느냐. 선한 이는 오직 한 분이시니라. 네가 생명에 들어가려면 계명들을 지키라
청년은 예수님께 무슨 선한 일을 해야 영생을 얻겠냐고 여쭈었습니다. 그 질문 속에는 더 잘해 보려는 마음, 더 열심히 살겠다는 결심, 그리고 도리를 다하면 보상을 받으리라는 기대가 담겨 있었을 것입니다. 실제로 그는 계명을 지키며 정직하게 살아온 착실한 사람이었습니다. 그래서 "아직도 무엇이 부족합니까?"라고 물을 수도 있었던 것이었을 것입니다.
하지만 예수님은 그에게 되묻습니다. "왜 선한 일을 내게 묻느냐?" 예수님은 이 질문을 통해 '선한 일'이 무엇이며 누가 참으로 선한 분이신지를 다시 생각하게 하십니다. 또, 우리가 우리 힘으로 '선을 축적'하여 그 무게로 하늘 문을 열 수 있다고 여기는지 되돌아보게 하십니다.
또, 예수님은 "무엇을 하면 구원을 받을 수 있습니까?"라는 질문은 옳은 질문이 아니라고 말씀하십니다. 왜냐하면 구원이란 '내가 무엇을 해서' 얻는 것이 아니라 '하나님의 선하심으로 인해' 주어지는 선물이기 때문입니다.
선을 행하는 것 자체는 문제되지 않습니다. 그러나 '내가 선을 행했으니 보상을 받아야 마땅하다'는 자기 의 또는 자기 공로에 대한 확신은 우리를 하나님에게서 멀어지게 만듭니다. 그리고 그 마음은 곧 "나는 꽤 괜찮은 사람인데, 왜 더 요구하십니까?"라는 근심으로 바뀌고 청년처럼 슬픔 속에 뒤돌아서게 되는 것인것 같습니다.
예수님은 우리에게 선을 쌓아 영생에 이르려 하지 말고 선을 이루시는 분, 곧 하나님 자신을 따르라고 말씀하십니다. 구원은 선을 쌓아올린 결과가 아니라 선하신 하나님을 향한 삶 속에서 피어나는 열매임을 믿습니다.
Matthew 19:17: Jesus replied, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments."
A young man once asked Jesus what good deed he needed to do in order to receive eternal life. His question carried the desire to do better, the resolve to live more earnestly, and the expectation that if he fulfilled his duty, he would be rewarded. In fact, he was a diligent man who had kept the commandments and lived with integrity. That is why he could even ask, "What do I still lack?"
But Jesus turned the question back to him: "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Through this, Jesus led him to reflect on what "good" truly means and who the One is that is truly good. He was inviting the man to reconsider whether salvation comes by accumulating good deeds, as if their weight could open the gates of heaven.
Jesus was also showing that the question, "What must I do to be saved?" is not the right question. Salvation is not something we achieve by our own efforts - it is a gift given because of God’s goodness.
Doing good, in itself, is not the problem. But the belief that "I have done good, therefore I deserve a reward" builds self-righteousness and confidence in one’s own merit, and this can distance us from God. That same mindset can easily turn into frustration: "I've already been a good person, why do you ask for more?" It was this very struggle that led the young man to walk away in sorrow.
Jesus teaches us not to chase eternal life by piling up good deeds, but to follow the One who is good and who brings goodness, God Himself. Salvation is not the result of stacked-up works but the fruit that grows from a life turned toward the goodness of God.
