The Paradox of Victory
히브리서 12장 1절- 2절 : 이러므로 우리에게 구름같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들이 있으니, 모든 무거운 것과 얽매이기 쉬운 죄를 벗어버리고 인내로써 우리 앞에 당한 경주를 하며 믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자. 그는 그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여 십자가를 참으사 부끄러움을 개의치 아니하시더니 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉으셨느니라.
히브리서 기자는 믿음을 경주에 비유합니다. 그래서 쉽게 우리는 "끝까지 싸워 이기자"라거나 "결국에는 승리하자"라고 말을 합니다. 하지만 성경이 말하는 '승리'는 우리가 생각하는 승리와 본질적으로 다릅니다.
예수님의 승리는 십자가였습니다. 예수님의 싸움은 상대를 굴복시키는 힘의 대결이 아니라 하나님의 뜻에 순종하는 싸움이었습니다. 그리고 그 절정은 수난과 죽음으로 완성되었습니다. 만약 우리가 믿음을 이야기하면서도 예수님이 어떤 방식으로 이기셨는지를 잊는다면 우리 역시 믿음의 방향을 잃게 될 것입니다.
십자가의 승리는 역설의 승리입니다. 세상이 실패로 규정한 그 자리에서 예수님은 하나님의 구원을 이루셨습니다. 높아지지 않고 낮아짐으로, 억압하지 않고 사랑함으로, 세상이 실패라고 부른 방식으로 참된 승리를 완성하셨습니다.
이 놀라운 역설을 받아들이는 것이 믿음입니다. 그 믿음은 세상의 기준이 아니라 하나님의 질서를 따라 살아가게 하는 나침반이 됩니다. 히브리서 기자가 "예수를 바라보라"고 권면한 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다. 십자가를 참으신 예수님을 바라볼 때 우리는 세상의 승리가 아닌 하나님의 승리를 향한 방향을 회복하게 됩니다.
오늘도 그 길로 초대하신 주님께 감사드립니다. 시선을 잃지 않고 예수님께서 보여주신 그 승리의 방향으로 살아가길 기도합니다.
Hebrews 12:1–2 : Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The writer of Hebrews compares faith to a race. Naturally, we think this means we must fight to the end or win the race. But the victory that Scripture speaks of is fundamentally different from the kind the world celebrates.
The victory of Jesus was the cross. His struggle was not a contest of strength but an act of obedience to the will of God. The climax of His victory came through suffering and death. If we speak of faith yet forget the way Jesus triumphed, we risk losing our own sense of direction.
The cross represents a paradoxical victory. At the place the world saw as failure, Jesus accomplished salvation. By lowering Himself instead of exalting Himself, by loving instead of overpowering, He completed the truest and most enduring form of victory.
To accept this paradox is the essence of faith. Such faith becomes our compass, it leads us not by worldly standards of success, but by the divine order of God’s kingdom. This is why the writer of Hebrews urges us to "fix our eyes on Jesus." When we look to the One who endured the cross, we realign our lives toward God's victory, not the world's.
Today, we thank the Lord who invites us again to that path. May we not lose sight of Him, but walk steadily in the direction of the victory He revealed through the cross.
