The Gift of Perceiving God
요한일서 4장 8절 : 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 하나님을 알지 못하나니 하나님은 사랑이시라.
사랑하지 않는 자는 하나님을 알지 못한다는 말씀은 하나님을 느낄 수 있는 능력이 내 안에서 닫혀 있다면 그분의 존재를 인식할 수 없다는 의미로 이해됩니다.
하나님은 언제나 존재하십니다. 하지만 내 안에 그분을 느낄 수 있는 인식의 도구가 없다면 하나님이 계심에도 불구하고 나는 그 존재를 알아차릴 수 없습니다.
사랑은 하나님께서 은혜로 우리 안에 심어주신 인식의 도구입니다. 사랑을 통해 우리는 하나님의 존재를 깨닫고 사랑이라는 통로를 통해 하나님은 자신을 드러내십니다. 사랑이 있을 때 하나님은 가까이 느껴지고 사랑이 식을 때 하나님은 멀게 느껴집니다. 하나님이 떠나신 것이 아니라 우리 마음 속의 도구, 곧 사랑이 그분을 담지할 능력을 잃은 것입니다.
사랑의 신비한 점은 이 능력조차도 내가 스스로 만들어 낸 것이 아니라는 데 있습니다. 사랑은 은혜로 부어주신 선물입니다. 하나님께서 나를 열어 주셨기에 그 사랑이 내 안으로 흘러들어옵니다. 그러므로 내 안에 사랑이 있다는 사실은 내가 누구보다 낫다는 증거가 될 수 없습니다. 그것은 내 힘이 아니라 하나님이 나를 통과하신 흔적이기 때문입니다.
사랑은 능력입니다. 그러나 그 능력은 지배나 영향력으로 드러나지 않습니다. 사랑은 낮아짐 속에서 힘을 얻고 겸손으로 수렴됩니다. 사랑할수록 낮아지고 그 낮아짐 속에서 하나님은 더욱 또렷하게 드러납니다.
사랑을 알게 하신 하나님께 감사드립니다.
1 John 4:8 : Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
The words "Whoever does not love does not know God" mean that if the capacity to feel God is closed within us, we cannot truly perceive His presence. God always exists. But unless there is within us a faculty attuned to Him, we may live surrounded by His presence and yet remain unaware of it.
Love is that faculty. It is the divine instrument God places within us so that we may recognize Him. Through love, we come to perceive God; and through love, God reveals Himself to us. When love abounds, God feels near. When love grows cold, He seems distant, not because He has left, but because the vessel of love within us has lost its strength to hold Him.
The mystery of love lies in the fact that even this capacity is not of our own making. Love is not something we generate; it is a gift of grace poured into us. God opens our hearts so that His love may flow through. Therefore, the presence of love in us is never proof of superiority, it is evidence of God passing through our lives.
Love is power, yet it does not express itself in domination or control. It gains strength through humility and finds fullness in gentleness. The more we love, the lower we bend; and in that lowering, God becomes clearer.
Thanks be to God, who opened our hearts to know Him through love, the quiet miracle by which eternity touches the human soul.
