The Beginning and the End:
요한계시록 1장 8절 : 주 하나님이 말씀하신다. “나는 알파와 오메가이다. 나는 지금도 있고, 전에도 있었고, 앞으로 올 자, 전능한 자이다."
"태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라"로 시작한 성경은 요한계시록에 이르러 "나는 알파요 오메가라" 하시는 하나님의 선언으로 끝을 맺습니다. 성경의 처음과 끝은 이렇게 한 분, 곧 역사의 주인이신 하나님을 향해 서로 마주 서 있습니다. 수많은 사건과 인물, 예언과 시편들은 결국 이 단 하나의 진리를 증언하기 위한 이야기들입니다. 시작도 과정도 마침도 모두 하나님께 속해 있다는 것입니다.
우리가 성경을 버겁게 느끼는 이유는 이 단순하면서도 압도적인 진리를 인간의 한정된 이해 속에 담아내려 하기 때문입니다. 영원을 다루는 하나님의 이야기를 유한한 시간 안에서 이해하려 하면 당연히 모순과 의문이 생깁니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 이해를 통해 그분께 이르도록 허락하지 않으십니다. 오히려 하나님은 당신의 시간 속에서 스스로를 드러내십니다. 그 시간이 언제, 어떤 방식으로 우리 삶 속에 들어올지는 오직 하나님의 뜻에 달려 있습니다. 그러므로 신앙이란 이해의 결과가 아니라 개시의 순간을 기다리고 받아들이는 태도가 되는 것 같습니다.
성경의 핵심은 이처럼 알파이자 오메가이신 하나님의 신비를 받아들이는 데 있습니다. 인간의 논리로는 설명할 수 없는 '시작이자 끝'이라는 역설을 믿음의 자리에서 수용하는 것입니다. 알 수 없는 신비와 드러내 주시는 은혜 사이에서 우리는 하나님을 신뢰하고 그분이 허락하신 공동체 안에서 사랑하며 하루를 살아갑니다.
오늘도 그 신비 앞에 고개가 숙여집니다. 이해할 수 없기에 더 깊이 경외하고 붙잡을 수 없기에 더 간절히 사랑하게 됩니다. 아름다운 세상 속에서 이 유한한 생을 허락하신 주님께 감사드립니다.
Revelation 1:8 : The Lord God says, 'I am the Alpha and the Omega, the One who is, who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.'
The Bible, which begins with the words, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth," ends in Revelation with God’s own declaration, "I am the Alpha and the Omega." The first and last pages of Scripture stand face to face, pointing to the same truth, that history belongs to one Lord. Every story, every prophecy, every psalm exists to bear witness to this single reality: that the beginning, the journey, and the end all belong to God.
We often find the Bible overwhelming because we try to contain this vast and simple truth within our limited understanding. When the eternal story of God is read through the narrow lens of human time, it naturally creates tension and confusion. But God does not allow us to reach Him through understanding alone. Instead, He reveals Himself in His own time. When and how that divine moment breaks into our lives depends solely on His will. Faith, then, is not the result of comprehension, it is the posture of waiting for revelation and receiving it when it comes.
The heart of Scripture lies in accepting this mystery that God is both Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. It means trusting the paradox that cannot be explained by logic, believing what can only be received through grace. Between the mystery we cannot grasp and the grace that reveals itself, we learn to trust God, to love within the community He has given us, and to live each day in faith.
Today, I bow before that mystery once again. Because I cannot fully understand Him, I revere Him more deeply. Because I cannot hold Him, I love Him more earnestly. And I give thanks to the Lord who allows us, within this fleeting life, to glimpse His beauty in this world He so tenderly made.
