“... ‘상상의 공동체’ 프랑스어 번역본 제목 L’imaginaire nationale에 관한 우려를 표하자, 번역자인 그는 프랑스어에는 영어의 ‘공동체community’에 해당하는 표현이 없다고 답했다.“

When I expressed my reservations about the title, L’imaginaire nationale, he replied that the French language has no equivalent to the English ‘community,’ with its overtones of social warmth and solidarity. ‘Communauté’ (as in Communauté Européenne) has an unavoidably cold, bureaucratic feel to it.”

번역을 담당한 피에르 도자(Pierre-Emmanuel Dauzat, 1958-)는 원작과는 다소 차이나는 제목이 붙게 된 배경을 덧붙여 설명한다.
“프랑스어에는 사회의 온정과 연대를 의미하는 ‘공동체’(영어의 'community')에 해당하는 단어가 없다. 프랑스어의 'communauté‘는 냉정하면서도 관료적 맥락에서 사용되는 표현이다.“
