Gentrification
Many programs in Korea handle issues about gentrification. Gentrification has been due to rise up of money for lands. Because, at first time on unpopular streets, poor artists and some small business persons started their unique business on cheap lands built for survive in the market in Korea.
Usually, they didn’t have enough money to start own business in cities while they need attraction by own character so they need brilliant ideas for independent business in the competitive market in Korea.
But, after the place had been popular, due to unique of shops, the prices of lands has been sharply rising up and landlords asked high rental fees more 2 times than before.
People could not stand in these lands. They were moved to new area. That is called as gentrification in Korea. They had to find out new poor area for life with debts on shoulders.
Why Je-ju ?
After popular of Olle Roads in Je-su (Olle Roads is around of Ju-ju island alongside see), Many people moved to Je-su island for new life. It is called immigrant people to Je-ju, people from peninsular of Korea, actually same country, to Ju-ju island
People dislike metropolitan life
The reason to move to Je-ju is not due to economic issues. They just need relax life and happy life. The cities in Korea were dense of people. It makes people to be stressful to be angry each. It is common, some hit your shoulders walking on streets. They don’t say “I am sorry”. They just pass beside you. Many people are so fast walking to somewhere and looks so busy.
The important of space
The space of our life is very important to affect minds of peace and of relaxation so people need natural spaces of lands. They moved to Je-ju island due to their own character. Je-ju is best area to feel peace and happiness through winds, bright lights and good sounds of wave from see. Many people go to find romance lives in Je-ju island. Economy is not reason to move.
Another type of gentrification to indigenous people
But Je-ju is also changed by money. Many people invested lands for business. Je-ju has been popular suddenly due to natural values but there is new gentrification started by people’s desire to have peaceful life.
Indigenous people din’t intend to start business like in Seoul. They just have been living normal lives in Je-ju islands but if some indigenous people didn’t have own lands or own houses, they have to be out of Ju-ju island like gentrification in Seoul.
Gentrification in Seoul is due to economy desire, Gentrification in Je-ju is due to peaceful life desire. These phenomenon are related each. That is no empathy of living together.
What is tourism?
What is tourism? Je-ju islands was calm area before 10 years. Olle Roads was not popular like now. Just they would have wanted Ju-ju will be known as peaceful area in Korea. But now, Je-ju is not peaceful area anymore like before. How to develop sustainable tourism. Development is different to Gentrification.
The Attitude

Tourism is related tourist’s attitude. Olle Roads were natural roads and clean but slightly those roads has been dirty. Why do we need to develop? and Why do we need peaceful life?
Next step?
Investors need to respect small business and People need to respect indigenous people. Otherwise, we can lost something as we want to get something.
Sustainable development is relation. If it lost first attractive, it is not sustainable development for next generation.
