바위에 구애하기

-옥타비오 파스를 위해

태초의 암석의 자궁에서

올멕족들은 손수 블록을 골라갔다

비의 신의 궁전을 짓기 위해

그들은 바위를 흘겼다

그들의 고동치는 혈관 소리를 들었다

그리고 뺨을 맞대고 쓰다듬었다

막대에 묶은 화산석으로

그들은 바위의 자궁에 구멍을 뚫었다

그리고 뼈로 채웠다

축축한 찰흙의 혀로

그들은 상처 입은 곳을 가두었다

그들은 불을 질렀다

바위의 허벅지를 따뜻하게 했다

그리고 찬물을 뿌렸다

수많은 사랑의 증거 끝에

바위는 스스로 열었다

그리고 원하는 모양의 블록을 낳았다

WOOING THE ROCKS

for Octavio Paz

From the womb of virgin rocks

The Olmecs took blocks single-handed

To build the rain-god's palaces

They ogled the rocks

Listened to their throbbing veins

And cheek stroked cheek

With volcanic stone tied to rods

They bored holes in the rocks' womb

And filled them with bones

With tongues of damp clay

They trapped the wounded places

They laid fires

Warmed the rocks' thighs

And sprinkled them with cold water

After so many proofs of love

The rocks opened by themselves

And gave birth to blocks of the shape desired
