여기 오랜 친구여
이 땅 조각 위에
화재와 홍수의 생존자들이 피난처를 찾았네
그들은 최선을 다해 정착했네
서로의 꼭대기에
하늘을 꿰뚫는 비둘기 새장*에
그들은 콘크리트를 쪼아 먹네
그을음의 빗물을 삼키네
땀에 젖은 강철에 숨이 막히네
그리고 그들의 깃털이 천지 사방을 날아가는 동안
그들은 기다리네
거기
그들의 아득한 고향에서
불이 꺼지고 물이 물러갈 때까지
그래서 그들은 돌아갈 수 있네
고요해진 강 옆 가까이
푸르게 뒤덮인 언덕의 경사면에
그들의 크기만큼 지어진 집으로
그때까지 오랜 친구여

LEGEND OF THE BIG CITY
Here old buddy
On this scrap of earth
Survivors of fire and flood took refuge
They settled as best they could
On top of each other
In pigeon-lofts piercing the sky
They peck at concrete
Gulp sooty rainwater
Choke in sweaty steel
And while their feathers fly all over
They wait
Till there
In their distant homeland
The fire dies down and the waters retreat
So they can go back
To houses built to their measure
On the slope of a hill grown green
Close by a river gone calm
Till then old buddy
